Semantic Networks with Heterogeneous Information Exchange

Abstract: This paper provides a theoretical framework and a model description for heterogeneous information exchange in an endogenous social network. Moreover, the aim of the model is to look for semantic emergence or semantic patterns that may arise from such repeated exchange. In the theoretical layout, information is represented as nodes in the personal informational networks and edges in the social network. A clear distinction between “noise” and “semantic information” is made using economic marginal concepts. Thus, the semantic dimension of information and the incentives and constraints of information exchange are defined based on the economic cost and benefit. While the theory defines the concepts and setup for exchange, the model describes the exchange processes in time. In the model, incentivized agents exchange by signaling or searching for information. After repeated exchange in the network, the comparison between the semantic information and all the information exchanged, at different time steps, shows if there is semantic emergence.
